What is Gaia?🌍¶
Gaia is an experimental installation artwork. It explores the coexistence of forgotten electronic devices and Earth’s natural ecology, presenting a symbiotic relationship between technology and nature, while infusing it with natural wisdom.

Gaia- Github Repository¶
This is a brand new and fascinating experiment. Through this collaboration with the team and with the guidance of our teacher, I discovered that many discarded pieces of trash might seem “dead”. However, when selected by humans and given new life through art, they become truly intriguing. We often say that machines are lifeless and fixed, while nature is free and dynamic. In this project, I incorporated an interesting natural organism I encountered in Jamaica—the mimosa plant. When you approach a mimosa, it naturally gives you a warning or signal, which is undoubtedly a display of natural wisdom. We have infused this wisdom into ‘Gaia’ as well. When humans approach, the soft robotics respond accordingly. Additionally, we incorporated algae, and mycelium into ‘Gaia’. These elements together beautifully demonstrate the symbiotic relationship between technology and nature, provoking deep reflection.
Personal Reflection
During micro Challenge II we had four people in the group, so we had more advantages and could accomplish more in one week. Working with people is really fun, and we can share many interesting things and come up with many crazy ideas. I love this challenge; I learn as I play, which I think is the best way to learn. The most exciting part was when we looking for the abandoned electronics and testing them, thinking about how we could put them together and arrange their positions. For me is like playing advance LEGO. Big THANK to Santi for trusting and allowing us to use the electronics. 💚
