Notes
Intro:¶
This week-long seminar focuses on exploring self-sufficient futures and revitalization systems within the biosphere of Terres de l’Ebre in southern Catalonia. Our research takes place at our professor’s ten-hectare farm near Benifallet, located in a critical edge zone facing desertification, economic decline, and agricultural abandonment. Despite these challenges, the region stands out as one of Europe’s fifty unique ecological biospheres, characterized by diverse landscapes such as high mountain ranges, the Ebro River Delta, and a rich history dating back to pre-Roman times.
We divided into pairs, with each group identifying a main focus point to research in the professor’s field. Based on our findings, each group proposed solutions and design interventions aimed at addressing the identified challenges.
I worked with Alfred on this project that examined a small patch of land, specifically a one-meter square cube in Benifallet. Our focus was on the different species within that space, particularly the role of cover plants. These plants are crucial for protecting the soil and maintaining temperature balance. By closely observing this small area, we aimed to understand how cover plants support the surrounding environment and contribute to ecosystem resilience.

Reflection
💌This one-week immersive field trip was so unforgettable. I had the best time this week — not only was it fun, but I also gained a lot of knowledge at the same time. We ate, slept, and studied together in the real world, which is the best way to learn. If I have the chance, I will definitely come back to the field.
A big thanks to Jonathan, Kevin, and Georgina, who helped us a lot during the trip and organized this amazing experience. They made this short week feel like home. I hope to see you all soon! 💌
